Fuel For Local Trip Is Just an Electric Plug Away

Illinois considering legislation to permit 25 mph Neighborhood Electric Vehicles on streets with 35 mph speed limits.

SPRINGFIELD -- Fred Biederman dreams of commuting to work every day without ever having to fill up a gas tank.

The suburban Chicago man is hopeful he'll have that chance under a measure that would allow municipalities to permit the use of electric-powered "neighborhood electric vehicles" on certain roads.


Under proposed legislation, the Low Speed Vehicles powered by batteries would be allowed only on roads with a maximum speed limit of 35 miles an hour - the same rule as in most of the states that allow them. GEM neighborhood electric vehicle pictured below.
