Auckland's Mayor Dick Hubbard has chosen a hybrid-electric Toyota Prius, recognised as a car of the future, as a way of reducing vehicle pollution and saving fuel costs.

Prius, which has a petrol engine and an electric motor/generator, has performance similar to a 2.4-litre conventionally-powered car and can carry five people and their luggage.

Exhaust emissions are nearly 90 per cent less than those from a car of similar size powered by a petrol engine.

Playing catch-up a decade late, the world's auto giants now find that they have to lease or buy technology from Toyota.
