The auto industry has a love-hate relationship with government.

In short, it loves the incentives and help in advancing new technologies. It hates the regulations.

For example, carmakers see huge benefits from California's plan to develop a network of hydrogen fueling stations for fuel cell vehicles. But that didn't stop the auto industry from suing the Golden State over a law passed last year to restrict vehicle exhaust emissions.
