California Congressman Urges Oil Drilling in ANWR

Letter to the editor by U.S. Rep. Richard W. Pombo (R. CA) argues best way to reduce foreign oil imports is to exploit Alaska's north costal plain, also known as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The energy plan the Mercury News recommended in its Jan. 19 editorial offered a well-intended but superficial and hasty solution to our nation's concerns.

Vehicle fuel economy may have improved greatly since the 1975 mandates, but Americans are more dependent upon foreign oil today.

We need to solve our energy dependence without forcing auto manufacturers to raise their prices. I am encouraging Congress again to open Alaska's north coastal plain for development.
