ONG>TAMPA - Florida's first electric-diesel buses hit Hillsborough County streets today, promising riders less noise and residents cleaner air.

HARTline bought the three hybrid buses with federal money and has two more on order.

They burn less diesel fuel than HARTline's other buses but cost more - $490,000 compared with $325,000 to $350,000 for similar, all-diesel buses.

HARTline was able to buy the cleaner-running buses from the same company that supplied the rest of its fleet. The new vehicles are largely identical to HARTline's other buses except the hybrids have large battery packs built into the roof, raising the profile by several feet.
