America's Looming - and Permanent - Oil Crisis

Jim Gardner's Letter to the Editor urges his community in Southwest Viriginia to begin serious discussions and planning to begin to prepare for peak oil.

Nobody likes to hear bad news. So, when Michael Abraham's commentary appeared on Dec. 14, "Our oil dependency is catching up with us," I can understand readers who may have been tempted to turn to the sports page.

Perhaps others rationalized the message by wanting to believe that Chicken Little (and his "falling sky") would surely be found somewhere in the Abraham family lineage. While such responses to the message would be understandable, I believe they also would be a mistake.

Aldous Huxley told us, "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored," and my research into this issue leads me to the same dire conclusions as Abraham.
