Engineering students help bring electricity to village in India with biodiesel-fueled generator

Published: 04-Jan-2005

Engineering students at the University of Illinois are using the nature that surrounds a village in India to help bring electricity to the residents there.

The students are working with Engineers Without Borders, a nonprofit organization that helps developing areas worldwide with their engineering needs.

The plan involves supplying electricity to 164 homes in the village of Badakamandara. The villagers will harvest oil seeds, picked from surrounding trees, and dry them in the sun or an oven. The seeds will then be ground, and the oil extracted, filtered, preheated and poured into the tank of a motorized generator as biodiesel fuel.
