As you ride the bullet train along the railways of Japan the overall impression is that you're passing through a country of industry unlike any other. Sprawling industrial complexes merge into city centres crammed with apartment blocks.

Well, Japan is a massive energy consumer - it imports vast amounts of oil to power its factories and supplements its need with coal, gas, hydro and nuclear power stations.
