Russia's Putin Hears Energy-Thirsty China's Needs
BEIJING (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin headed into talks with Chinese leaders Thursday aiming to boost trade, but cautious not to make promises he cannot keep on oil and gas projects.
Putin has ruled out Beijing's hopes for an oil pipeline from western Siberia and is staying quiet on prospects for an $18 billion project to take gas to China, the world's fastest-growing major economy, and South Korea.
Putin is the second prominent European ruler to visit China in a week, After French President Jacques Chirac visited last weekend sealed nearly $5 billion worth of deals in one of the world's fastest-growing economies.
