St. Louis Motor Manufacturer Expands Line into Fuel-Cell Vehicles

Ecostar, a joint venture of Ford, DaimlerChrysler and Ballard Power Systems, has chosen the Emerson Motors division of Emerson to help develop electric motors for fuel-cell cars.

Emerson, which already is the largest maker of industrial motors, is branching out into motors for fuel-cell vehicles, which are thought by many to be the cars of the future.

Ecostar, a joint venture of Ford, DaimlerChrysler and Ballard Power Systems, has chosen the Emerson Motors division of Emerson to help develop electric motors for fuel-cell cars.

"We think we're really on to something big here," said Rob Boteler of Emerson Motors. But neither he nor spokesmen for Ecostar would put a dollar amount on what this business could mean for Emerson, St. Louis' biggest company.
