People buying hybrid cars over the next four years in Minnesota would get a sales-tax break under a bill moving through the Senate.

The idea is to narrow the price difference between regular and hybrid cars, possibly prompting more sales.

Sen. Julianne Ortman, R-Chanhassen, called the legislation social engineering, saying the market, not a state sales-tax break, should dictate the prices of cars.
