Report Raises Estimate of Australian Wind Power

National grid can accomodate up to 8000 megawatts of wind energy, upping previous estimate of 5,000 megawatts

Australia's national electricity market (NEM) could accommodate up to 8000 megawatts of wind energy, an Australian Greenhouse Office report says.

The finding surprised the renewables industry, with an Australian Wind Energy Association spokesman saying the maximum wind capacity in the NEM was previously estimated at about 5000 megawatts.

The report, by NSW University's Hugh Outhred, says that such a dramatic increase in wind capacity would have to be phased in over 10 years and be widely and evenly dispersed through the NEM.
