Hybrid Cars in Short Supply in New Jersey

Waiting lists grow for gas-electric cars

TRENTON -- Karl Bruninghaus bought an ocean-blue Toyota Prius in September 2002 and he's been on a waiting list for two months for a second -- a beige one he hopes to receive in February.

"Ecology is very important," Bruninghaus said of his decision to buy the gas-electric hybrid. "The fact that the Prius meets the 2008 requirements impresses the hell out of me," he said, also citing its high rating in Consumer Reports magazine and, of course, the price.

The 69-year-old from West Berlin is one of dozens of New Jersey residents who have had to wait -- some more than six months -- to buy a Prius, which along with the Honda Civic Hybrid and Insight are the only hybrid vehicles currently on the New Jersey market.
