Victorian Government has joined the growing list of new Toyota Prius customers as demand continues for the second-generation hybrid car that can travel up to 1000km on a single tank.

Toyota Australia executive chairman, John Conomos, praised the Victorian Government for taking the lead in environmentally friendly transport by ordering 100 of the hybrid petrol-electric vehicles.

“The Victorian Government has shown its commitment to environmental sustainability by joining the many Australians who are adapting early to this hybrid technology,” Conomos said.

Conomos said that demand for the new Prius had far exceeded the company’s expectations.

“We launched the original Prius in 2001 and sold 490 units in two years but within the first three months since the launch of the new generation model in October 2003 we have already received 400 orders. The response has been quite extraordinary.”

The Prius uses up to 50% less petrol than an equivalent-sized conventional car and emits about half the carbon dioxide.

“This clean running car looks and behaves like an ordinary car. Prius drivers do not sacrifice performance, comfort or convenience for the sake of a greener car, ” Conomos said.
