Arizona Lawmaker Wants SUVs to Pay More

Lowest registration fees would be reserved for cars and trucks that get at least 50 miles per gallon

NIX -- When it comes to vehicle registration fees, a state senator believes size should matter.

Sen. Slade Mead, R-Phoenix, wants to base those annual fees at least in part on how much gasoline it guzzles. Mead said the state should encourage the purchase of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Mead said he crafted SB 1060 in a way that will ensure that, overall, Arizonans will be paying no more to the state. He said the higher fees paid by the drivers of the Hummers and sport utility vehicles will be offset by lower charges to owners of Hondas and hybrid gas-electric vehicles.

Not everyone agrees.
