New Jersey Passes California-style Emissions Law

New law to impose tougher pollution limits on all new cars and require dealers offer hybrids and super-clean gas cars in 2009 and ZEVs in 2012.

In a move hailed by environmentalists, the state Senate and Assembly yesterday passed a proposal for New Jersey to adopt California's strict auto-emissions standards.

The legislation awaits action from Gov. McGreevey, who has indicated he will sign it.

Shortly before 10 p.m., the Assembly voted, 53-15 with two abstentions, to pass the legislation, which automobile manufacturers and dealers aggressively opposed.
