U.S. Rep. John Dingell said he would like to see a greater emphasis on diesel-powered vehicles during a visit Tuesday to the North American International Auto Show.

Dingell, D-Mich., said diesel engines can provide better gas mileage and cleaner air at little extra cost to the consumer. They also are available immediately, he said, and already are enjoying wide success in Europe.

"You can do it quicker than some of these exotic mechanisms they're talking about," Dingell said after examining a hybrid engine at Toyota Motor Co.'s display.
