60-foot-long articulated buses to be built by New Flyer

The city of  will buy 11 diesel/electric hybrid buses to use on a rapid transit route that will begin operating in December, Mayor Martin Chavez said Monday.

If the 60-foot-long articulated buses work as anticipated, it could mean the end of natural gas-powered buses in the city, Chavez said.

The hybrid diesels, which are built by the New Flyer Industries Limited in Winnipeg, Manitoba, pollute less, are quieter and get better mileage than regular diesel buses. In addition, they can go longer between fuelings than buses that are fueled with compressed natural gas, Chavez said.
