N class=article id=mainHTML>Friends of the Earth has published a new green energy guide today, urging people in the county to switch to renewable power. The Guide to Green Electricity Tariffs provides information about environmentally friendly power sources like wind and biomass.

All electricity suppliers are required by law to supply three percent of their power from renewable sources, but the new guide recommends tariffs that go beyond the legal minimum.

The four tariffs recommended by Friends of the Earth are: Ecotricity 121 (Ecotricity), RSPB Energy (Scottish and Southern Energy), Unite (Unit Energy) and Eco Energy (Northern Ireland Electricity).

Crucially, the companies who offer them do not own any gas or coal power stations, dubbed 'carbon dinosaurs' by Friends of the Earth.

Energy campaigner Bryony Worthington said: "New Year is traditionally the time when we clean up our lives. And what could be better than helping to clean up the planet.

"By switching to a green electricity supplier everybody can cut back on their personal contribution to climate change."
