Astris Energi Starts Pilot Production Fuel Cell Module

Akaline fuel cell seen as major technological breakthrough is use of inexpensive materials

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (CP) - Astris Energi Inc., a Toronto-area company developing an alkaline fuel cell, said Wednesday it has secured funding to begin pilot production of its Powerstack power module in January.

Astris says its major technological breakthrough is the use of inexpensive materials for fuel cell construction, eliminating expensive platinum used in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, a competing technology.

Earlier this month, Astris unveiled a 2.4-kilowatt generator powered by the Powerstack, which will be made at the company's plant in Vlasim, Czech Republic.
