DEARBORN, United States (AFP) - Toyota's redesigned hybrid-electric sedan won Motor Trend's coveted Car of the Year award, the car enthusiast magazine said.

The Toyota Prius beat 26 other vehicles to become the first hybrid-electric vehicle ever to be selected for the honor in a marked departure from the stylish winners of previous years.

Last year, Nissan's Infiniti's G35 sports sedan took the honor, while Ford Motor Company's Thunderbird coupe and DaimlerChrysler's PT Cruiser won in previous years.
