Bill Offers Hybrid Tax Credit

Incentives aim to spur development of diesel, fuel-cell, gas-electric vehicle power systems

WASHINGTON -- Congress is poised to approve a landmark package of new tax credits covering more fuel-efficient cars and trucks, a plan automakers hope will jump-start consumer demand for gas-electric hybrids and diesel engines.

Winning the tax credits has been one of the auto industry's top legislative priorities for several years. They've been finalized following months of negotiations on a comprehensive energy bill. That bill is expected to be debated this week.

The final package includes tax credits of $250 to $2,400 for fuel cell, advanced diesel, gas-electric hybrid and other alternative fuel vehicles.
