A Growing Dependence
It's an amazing system, when you think about it. More than 350 power-generating units spread across New England, connected by about 8,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, provide electricity to more than 6.5 million customers.
Over the years, the system has been reliable. Just this summer, the New England grid was uninterrupted by a massive power outage that stretched from New York to the Great Lakes.
But there are some dark clouds on the horizon, mostly related to the grid's over reliance on one source of fuel.
