Farm Power: From Waste to Energy

Inventor's patience and persistence to be rewarded with $750,000 government grant for Straw Energy Project

A clean-energy machine that a Prosser man stood by for nearly three decades is in line for $750,000 from Congress and a ticket out of obscurity.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., announced last week that money for the Straw to Energy Project, or simply Farm Power, is included in the final fiscal year 2004 Energy and Water Appropriations conference report. The Senate could vote on the bill as soon as Friday. A vote in the House also is imminent.

The news delighted Fred Beierle, one of the last surviving inventors of a system to create clean energy out of farm waste products such as grass straw.
