Public Lands Make West Fertile Grounds for Wind Power

Wildness areas protected by lack of steady winds and transmission lines

The nation's wind power developments so far have occurred primarily on private lands.

But many of the windiest places can be found on the vast public lands west of the Mississippi.

To date, about 500 of the nation's 4,700 megawatts of wind power capacity come from projects sited on public lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
