GE Riding the Wind
With a recent streak of major contracts in the United States and abroad, General Electric Co. executives are thinking green and riding the wind.
GE Wind Energy, a unit of Marietta-based GE Power Systems, has become the country's largest manufacturer of turbines and the second-largest in the world -- just a year into operation. GE (NYSE: GE) acquired the business from Enron Corp., shortly after the company went bankrupt.
Not long after the acquisition, GE found out that in addition to being a "green" technology, wind also is a profitable one.
