New Matsushita Battery Doubles Electric Bicycle Range
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (http://www.matsushita.co.jp/) and National Bicycle Industrial Co. (http://www.panabyc.co.jp/) said Thursday they will begin sales on Jan. 15 next year of a new electric sports bicycle capable of covering about twice the distance of a conventional battery-powered bicycle.
A single nickel battery charge enables a standard electric bicycle to travel 50 kilometers, but the new bike -- called "Hinoataru Sakamichi Toughness Vivi" -- can travel 110 km because the nickel battery has been upgraded to produce greater power output, the companies said.
A single battery charge takes three and a half hours. The new bicycle weighs 23.2 kilograms, the lightest among long-distance electric bikes, which usually weigh 28-29 kg.
