rado takes the national energy spotlight this week as government officials, industry leaders and environmentalists convene in two public meetings to debate energy policy.

The first meeting, held by a congressional task force on natural gas, will begin at 9 a.m. today at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden.

Two U.S. representatives - Bob Beauprez, R-Colo., and C.L. "Butch" Otter, R-Idaho - will hear the testimony of speakers representing Xcel Energy, several natural-gas producers, low-income energy-assistance groups and the Wilderness Society.

"Natural-gas prices have gone up significantly in the past couple of years," said Paul Wilkinson of the American Gas Association. "The issue is how this affects people, their jobs and the American economy."
