Biodiesel to Power Bloomington Transit
Specially formulated soybean oil will power four Bloomington Transit buses by the end of the year, if all goes as planned.
Bloomington Transit is accepting proposals from suppliers to provide a biodiesel bus fuel blend (20 percent soy biodiesel, 80 percent standard petroleum diesel) and technical support for a trial program. Director Lew May says the one-year pilot should start in late fall.
The biodiesel is a clean-burning, biodegradable fuel produced from soybean plants, a domestic, renewable resource. It is one of many alternative fuels or technologies that hundreds of bus fleets are using across the country. Benefits include lower emissions and fewer harmful effects on human health. Biodiesel also contributes to the country's farm economy, proponents say.
