We Just Have To Come Up with a Better Battery

Head of ECD argues we need to press ahead with EV/HEV development or US carmakers will be caught unprepared as they were in 1973.

Rolling blackouts in California are damaging the convenience factor of electric cars. Soaring utility prices are causing harm, too.

But all is not lost in the pursuit of zero-emissions vehicles, battery-powered cars and trucks that emit no pollutants.

"We just have to come up with a better battery," said Robert C. Stempel, a former General Motors Corp. chairman who now heads Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., a Michigan-based company engaged in advanced battery research.
