Syracuse's Electric Car 'Fleet' Is In

City officials test-drive some of the 25 GEM vehicles

Published: 17-Aug-2003

For a while Tuesday, it looked as if the administration of Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll was playing bumper cars in City Hall Commons.

A news conference announcing the deployment of 25 bubble-domed electric vehicles in the city ended with about a dozen of the golf-cart look-alikes starting and stopping their way out of the commons atrium and into the street.

"They've got great pickup!" Driscoll said as he led the exodus in a little car that will be assigned to City Hall. He was followed by little cars driven by Fire Chief John Cowin, Parks Commissioner Pat Driscoll and other city officials.
