Iowa Utility Aims to Reduce Fossil Fuel Use

Renewable energy bought from out-of-state sources draws fire

ONG>Cedar Rapids, Ia. - An Alliant Energy program that invites customers to pay more for electricity from renewable resources has attracted a small but growing number of customers.

At the end of June, more than 4,590 Alliant customers in Iowa were participating in the Second Nature program. Most participated at a lower level, paying up to 1 cent more per kilowatt hour than the full 2 cents they would pay at 100 percent participation.

The program, which started two years ago, has encountered some criticism. Some consumers thought Alliant should be providing renewable energy from Iowa, but the company gets renewable energy from a private wind farm near Wilmont, Minn., and a landfill near Mayville, Wis.
