Volvo Being Investigated for EV-Range Claims
First it was Volkswagen and its "dieselgate" scandal. Then there was Mitsubishi also caught falsifying its mileage numbers. Now along comes Volvo and its seven-passenger XC90 'plug-in' SUV.
The law firm of Keller Rohrback L.L.P. says they are investigating complaints by owners that the electric hybrid, which is supposed to get upwards of 25 miles of driving range on battery power alone, isn't delivering anywhere near that kind of range. According to the firm, "recent testing has revealed that the vehicle only achieves 40-58% of the advertised electric-only range."
Similar complaints were made about Honda's original Civic Hybrid back in 2012 now when owners complained they weren't getting anywhere near the miles-per-gallon fuel economy the company claimed for the car. States Amy Williams-Derry, one of the law firm's attorneys:
“Buyers of Volvo’s hybrid cars wanted to make earth-conscious choices and believed the manufacturer’s representations about the range they would get from these car’s electric batteries. The difference between the represented 25 miles and the cars’ actual battery life is astonishing and a real breach of the consumer’s trust.”
Volvo only recently announced an ambitious plan to put as many as 1 million electric-drive cars on the road by 2025.
