The Future Role of Supercapacitors in Electric Cars

Australian and US researchers team up to develop light-weight supercapacitors that when combined with normal batteries can improve the performance of electric cars.

A new car powered by its own body could soon be moving on the roads thanks to a promising breakthrough in nanotechnology.

The team of Nunzio Motta, Jinzhang Liu and Marco Notarianni of Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia and Francesca Mirri and Matteo Pasquali, Rice University in Houston, Texas, USA, has developed “supercapacitors” which are light weight that can be combined with normal batteries to increase dramatically the energy of an electric car.

Supercapacitors (“sandwiched” between two electrodes electrolyte carbon) were made in the shape of a thin film extremely strong, with high power density.


Enviro400 H hybrid electric buses, several of which will trial an inductive charging system starting in 2015.

Six special Enviro400H E400 hybrid buses will be equipped with wireless charging systems along London Route 60 between Canning Town and Walthamstow.
