Air-powered Car: Green Grail or Pipe Dream?

A French David is challenging the goliaths of the auto industry, saying it has invented a pollution-free car that runs on air, has a range of some 200 kilometers (120 miles) per tank and costs almost nothing to refuel.

The CityCat, a small van, sits alongside the MiniCat, a three-person saloon (US sedan), at the stand of MDI Enterprises SA at the Paris Motor Show opening this weekend, dwarfed by rivals from Honda, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota, Peugeot and Renault.

But if MDI's prototypes perform as well as claimed, the big guys might just as well pack up and go home -- for their petrol, diesel, electrical power and hydrogen are, it would seem, no match for... compressed air.
