It looks like a fleet of alien craft from a 60s sci-fi flick, but organisers hope a convoy of vehicles gliding into Melbourne offers more than just light entertainment.

Ten solar, electric and hybrid cars will hit Victoria's capital on Wednesday at the midpoint of the seventh annual Australian SunRace - a 2,300km trek from Adelaide to Sydney to encourage the use of sustainable energy in transport.

Following in race-leader Aurora 101, from Melbourne's RMIT University, the environmentally-friendly cars will be on show at Melbourne Museum.
