Avoiding the Charge Fuels Innovation

£5 daily charge in London spurs interest in battery EVs and other alternative fueled vehicles.

To the determined or downright devious, London's congestion charging regime will have a few tempting holes when it comes into effect on February 17.

Lots of the exemptions from the £5 daily charge will have Ken Livingstone's approval: battery-powered electric vehicles, cars powered by environmentally "clean" alternative fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and - for the moment at least - mopeds, scooters and motorbikes.

But the yearly cost of £1,200 for anyone travelling into or around London five days a week may well inspire even more colourful forms of avoidance.
