Hydrogen Car Proposal Draws Mixed Reactions

Sierra Club critical of 'Future Fuel' proposal.

President Bush's proposal to sharply increase research into pollution-free hydrogen fuel cell cars was praised Wednesday by the auto industry, but criticized by environmentalists.

The administration is using the research program to deflect criticism of its opposition to increase fuel economy standards for the kinds of cars that are on the road today, environmentalists said.
