Porsche to Introduce Electric Hybrid Cayenne in 2014

Plug-in version of 2015 Cayanne SUV reportedly will have EV-mode driving range of up to 22 miles and likely will use similar technology found in Panamera PHEV.

Porsche is expected to debut a plug-in hybrid version of the Cayenne SUV complete with 22-mile electric range this year. The new model will coincide with a facelift for the entire 2015 Porsche Cayenne range, aimed at making the big ‘off-roader’ more analogous with the sleeker new Porsche Macan.

So far Porsche has only offered a full hybrid version of the Cayenne – the 21mpg Cayenne S Hybrid – although a plug-in hybrid version with likely the same hardware as the Panamera S E-Hybrid would be significantly more frugal.

The Panamera S E-Hybrid combines a 3.0-liter gasoline V6 engine with a powerful electric motor, developing a combined 416bhp yet returning a combined 75.8mpg on the European cycle. Porsche will have no major problems repackaging the Panamera’s plug-in hybrid powertrain in the larger Cayenne as both cars employ a front-engined layout unlike other Porsche cars.

Panamera S E-Hybrid utilizes 9.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack that gives the car a rated fuel economy of 91 mpg and EV-mode range of up to 36 km (22 miles).

With its electric driving mode, the Panamera's fuel economy rivals that of the Toyota Prius C at 3.1 L/100 km.

2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid has EV-mode range of up to 24 miles.

The new Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid is similarly prices to top-line Tesla Model S and offers comparable performance, while offering up to 1,100 miles of driving range on it petrol engine.
