Hydrogen Auto To Travel Long and Winding Road
WASHINGTON - President Bush's proposal to spend $1.2 billion to develop a clean-burning hydrogen car jump-starts an old idea that combines the most abundant material in the universe with space-shuttle technology.
A hydrogen-powered car could make it to American roads in 10 to 20 years and eventually could wean the nation off foreign oil.
Bush endorsed that vision in his State of the Union address Tuesday, saying he wants a national commitment ``so that the first car driven by a child born today could be powered by hydrogen and pollution-free.''
