NYC Carriage Drivers: Electric Cars Are Not Like Horses

Carriage driver perspective on replacing their animals with period electric touring cars.

NEW YORK — Colm McKeever drove his first horse-drawn carriage around Central Park in June 1989.

The ride was with a couple from California who had gotten engaged on a carriage in New York City and returned each year on their anniversary to reminisce, McKeever said.

"When you are involved in people's moments, poignant moments in their lives, there's something so wonderful about that and completely contagious," said McKeever, 44, of West Nyack, N.Y.

Some 488,000 hybrids and electric car were sold in the USA in 2012, representing 3.3 percent of the market, but to reach 1 million by 2015, share would have to increase to 6 percent.
