Every hybrid car is equipped with a small 12V battery that powers its the car's electronics and if it's drained by the cold, just like a regular starter battery, the car won't run.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Among the thousands of motorists facing a "dead battery" issue recently were a few owners of hybrid cars.

Though these high-tech mileage champs use exotic metal hydride and lithium ion batteries to power electric motors, they also contain small lead acid batteries just like conventional cars.

The old-fashioned batteries don't actually crank or "turn over" the engine, but they are crucial nonetheless because they power up the electronic systems that control everything else in the car.
