SANYO Powers Ford's First Hybrid Electric Vehicle

The HEV battery system will be on display along with the Ford Escape HEV beginning January 6th at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 2001--SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., a world leader in battery technology, will be the sole supplier of battery systems for the Ford Motor Company's first Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV). The Escape HEV is designed to be the cleanest, most fuel-efficient sport utility vehicle on the planet when it debuts in 2003.

Increased awareness regarding environmental issues has further raised expectations for the rapid spread of low emission vehicles such as the HEV. As a result technology development in the related car and battery industries is moving ahead at a rapid rate. In 1999, SANYO succeeded in developing the industry's top performing nickel metal hydride battery for HEV which was exhibited at the Tokyo Motor Show. SANYO has since proceeded with developing a highly efficient battery system.

SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. has been a world leader in the rechargeable battery field covering the full range of consumer batteries beginning production of nickel cadmium batteries in 1964, nickel metal hydride batteries in 1990, lithium ion batteries in 1994, and lithium polymer batteries in 1999. SANYO has supplied makers all over the world of mobile phones, notebook computers and other devices with rechargeable batteries.

SANYO will expand into the HEV battery field responding to the new environmentally conscious era through its acquisition of other's nickel metal hydride battery business.
