TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Some 20 manufacturers, including Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor Co, DaimlerChrysler AG and Ford Motor Co, will jointly develop technology to allow fuel cell-powered vehicles to cover similar distances as gasoline-engine cars, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.

The partners will develop tanks to hold high-pressure hydrogen, the fuel used in fuel cell cars, to expand the fuel storage capacity of such vehicles by more than 40 pct, the paper said.

The joint effort aims to reduce the development costs and make their technologies become the industry standards to promote wider use of fuel cell vehicles, it said.
