Hi,
It has been said that it's not possible to clean up the environment until dependence on the oil economy is lessened. Add up the hidden cost of gasoline -- finding it, fighting wars to retain oil dictators, drilling, spilling and transporting it; 17 refineries mostly upwind of L.A. using pollution "credits" to foul the air, dangerous diesel emissions, auto exhaust, the huge area taken up by asphalt, gas stations and their leaks, oil fires, and so on...unfunded health care costs for all those emissions when they come down in our kids lungs, land on concrete, get washed into rivers fouling the Ocean...

If there were no alternative to using foreign oil, then it might be understandable that we agree to put up with it. But there is a way for at least a significant number of people to commute to work every day and not use gaso at all. Rooftop solar power systems are becoming common, pouring juice into the grid when it's most needed -- daytime peak periods. For many, this pays for their charging their battery-powered electric vehicles (EV) off-peak.

Many people have driven daily to work for years, now, using EVs with a range of 120 miles such as the NiMH Honda EV+, GM EV1 and Toyota RAV4-EV.

Thus, it is possible to live without gaso, and even to prosper, as one is freed from dependence on the gas pump.

It does not take getting rid of ALL gas cars. When you go to Mammoth, or to Alaska, with a load, maybe a gas vehicle makes sense; but if all the SUV driven to work single-o were instead ZEV cars like our RAV4-EV, the price of gaso would fall to less than a buck and we could ignore OPEC threats.

EV drivers have LOVED their EVs, and have paid the money demanded and suffered the humiliations heaped on by the oil and auto companies -- refusing to sell the EVs, lying about cost, even reputedly sabotaging the first EV1 cars with faulty batteries. There are THREE or more non-compatible plugs, for example, to try to hamper charging. Only Toyota allowed purchase of the RAV4-EV, all the others were confiscated when the leases were cancelled, GM returning checks uncashed.

Despite all the difficulties created by the auto makers, there is a huge, and growing, cadre of EV drivers.

Now, with bogus assurances about eventual fuel cells and focus on gasoline-dependent "hybrids", the Auto Manufacturers Alliance has sued to kill EVs and, in the case of GM and Honda, just plain refused to obey the ZEV mandate or allow us to keep our EVs. Honda and GM took the cars back to break them up for scrap or to put them in a museum, confident that the road is clear for continued production of large numbers of highly profitable but deadly SUVs.

SUVs and gaso-dependent "hybrids" that continue our growing dependence on imported oil. Current hybrids, after all, get ALL of their energy from gaso, because they do NOT plug in.

Toyota states that they will discontinue the excellent RAV4-EV due to "lack of interest". Yet ALL 2002 RAV4-EV were SOLD OUT despite delays due to charger input and lack of marketing. Could it be that they were astounded at the growing success of the program, and cancelled it to cover up the fact that alternatives to gaso ARE available?

EV1 drivers whose cars are being confiscated by GM for destruction were choosing RAV4-EV over gaso cars in large numbers. Could it be that Toyota was surprised by the fact that ALL 2002 cars sold out, and, despite the secrecy, more and more orders are pouring in? They, too, now refuse to take more orders, and turn customers away who have checks in hand...does this make sense to you?

Toyota admits that, even as they cancel the program, there are a growing number of orders they cannot fill:

"...there may be a wait period of up to 3-6 months
while production arrives from Japan. We apologize
for the delay..."

This is not a lack of DEMAND, it's a lack of SUPPLY! Clearly, Toyota wants the ZEV mandate to go away as they
concentrate on so-called "hybrid" technology, and continue our dependence on foreign oil dictators and indirectly finance terrorists.

DO ELECTRIC CARS WORK?
----------------------
Yes. Despite all the attempts to hide, sabotage and ignore the EV cars, and to confound, discourage and over-charge the EV drivers, here are the facts:

1. I, and many others, drove an EV to work each day for years.
We sail past gas stations, for years buying NO gaso, ignoring
gaso prices.
2. I drove a Honda EV+ to Eugene, OR, in an ice storm over the
Shasta pass, no problem with cold for the NiMH batteries.
3. Using solar rooftop power to generate electricity for the
grid in the day helps lower the demand peak; slow charging
off-peak actually help smooth the usage curve.
4. We use NO GASOLINE, which means that the energy burden
is shifted from foreign oil to clean solar electricity.
5. Our EV holds a max. of 26 kwh, the energy equivalent of
less than a gallon of gas, on which it goes 120 miles.
Not only is the EV easier on the environment, it uses
FAR LESS ENERGY.
6. Very little brake wear, and no oil changes, means less
"urban runoff", because when you take your foot off the
accelerator, the motor turns into a generator, and some
of the energy of motion is sucked back into the battery.
When we go to Big Bear, it takes energy to go up, but we
get it back (instead of burning brakes) when we come down.
7. Not all gaso cars need to be eliminated, only allow SOME
EV drivers to continue. LET THE MARKET DECIDE! If no one
wants EVs, they will die out; instead, you see die-hard EV
drivers who do not believe the auto company lies.
8. The EV1 is peppy, if you want a sporty car, and even the
RAV4 can beat large trucks on the way to work. EV has
maximum power at zero RPM, so takeoff is very fast.
9. There is only one moving part, essentially, the motor
rotor, and it's going in the same direction as the wheels.
This means smooth power lift-off, not the contention of
thousands of parts found in gasoline engines. No fuel pump,
wrist pins, connecting rods, oil changes, piston rings,
carburetor, flywheel, transmission and clutch, no radiator
coolant, water pump, timing chain, on and on. Brushless
AC 3 phase motor with sealed bearings lasts hundreds of
thousands of miles, speed is limited to 80 miles per hour
by an on-board governor. Of course it will be cheaper and
easier to maintain, if the auto companies told truth.

If America wanted to produce clean EVs, we would put out a model every year, improving them, lowering cost, finding new techniques to increase range, improving charging and standardizing plugs. All that is lacking is the will, and the ability to fight the lure of big OIL PROFITS. Oil dependence is NOT in the best interests of anyone.

HOW CAN TOYOTA BE INDUCED TO CHANGE THIS DECISION?
--------------------------------------------------

Maybe there is no way, but at least those who know about EVs, and those who demand a rational policy on getting rid of our OIL BASED ECONOMY, can make Toyota feel the public relations pain. Toyota, like many fine Japanese and other companies, does NOT like unseemly public displays of dissatisfaction with its policies or products. Let's see how long they can stand the scrutiny!

PROTEST OUTSIDE TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS!
------------------------------------

There will be daily protests, 8:00 A.M. for an hour or
so, and 5:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.
19001 South Western Avenue
Torrance, CA 90509-2722 offer@toyotaheadquarters.m0.net

Theme of the protest:

RAV4-EV NOT SUV MONSTERS
DON'T CANCEL ELECTRIC CARS
DRIVE ELECTRIC STARVE TERRORISTS
DON'T BE FOOLED, HYBRIDS ARE STILL GAS CARS
RAV4-EV USES NO GAS
STOP SUPPORTING OIL DICTATORS
GM UNFAIR, TOYOTA UNFAIR, LET US KEEP OUR EVS
TOYOTA DON'T KILL CLEAN AIR
SUPPORT THE ZERO EMISSION VEHICLE RAV4-EV

-----------------------------------------
Here's some of the fatuous statement by Toyota:

"...Toyota Motor Corporation will discontinue the
production of the RAV4 Electric Vehicle worldwide in
the spring of 2003. Therefore, Toyota will no longer
take orders for the RAV4 EV in the retail market
in California...We apologize for any inconvenience
this may cause..."

DON'T LIVE IN CALIFORNIA, WHAT CAN I DO?
----------------------------------------
Write, call or FAX Toyota headquarters, tell them you
want the RAV4-EV expanded, not cut out! Don't let them
snow-job you into continued dependence on foreign oil
dictators, boring SUVs, and phony "hybrids" that they
brag "don't plug in" (but don't get much better mileage,
if any, than any other small well-tuned car!).
