Taipei, Jan. 1 (CNA) The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) under the Executive Yuan has agreed to allow an industrial group another three years to continue the development of Taiwan's first electric motorcycle.

The group, formed by Sanyang Industrial Co. and 10 other local companies, obtained a three-year FTC permit to develop, design and market electric motorcycles in 1998. However, because a bottleneck developed around a vital technique, which remains unsettled, the FTC recently approved the application by the group to extend the development period for three more years until Dec. 31, 2003. The FTC believes that once the locally developed electric motorbikes start commercial production, it will improve the quality and reduce the production cost of motorbikes. The new motorcycles will also produce fewer emissions and will improve the environment. (By Victor Lai)
