GM Wheels Out Hybrids
America's General Motors is expected to announce plans today to begin producing up to one million petrol-electric hybrid cars and trucks a year.
The GM move is a challenge to the lead that Japanese car makers have so far held in the race to bring such technology to the market.
GM's strategy is to offer hybrids in its most popular models, including gas-guzzling trucks and sport utilities (SUVs), in order to pump up sales volume and quickly amortise development costs.
