DETROIT (AFX) - Auto makers expect to encounter an increased preference for fuel-efficient cars on the part of American consumers at next week's Detroit Auto Show, but the US public is not likely to abandon its affection for outsized vans and light trucks, industry analysts and executives said.

Instead, consumers are expected to flock to vehicles which combine fuel-efficiency with the size and heft of suburban utility vans, they said.

Ford Motor Co spokesman David Reuter said his company plans to unveil 15 new autos at the Detroit show, though full details are under media embargo and will not be available until the press preview gets underway on Sunday.
