Evercel Announces Battery Order for Electric Scooters in Italy
DANBURY, Conn., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Evercel, Inc. (Nasdaq: EVRC), a leader in the development and manufacture of advanced rechargeable batteries, has received an order with a total value of up to $2,000,000, from Oxygen S.p.A. of Italy. The order calls for 600 (Scooter Equivalent Battery Sets) of Evercel's 1.5 kWh M40-48 premium nickel-zinc batteries to be delivered to Oxygen during the first quarter of 2001. The batteries will be installed in Oxygen's Lepton-E electric scooter. Oxygen will sell and distribute the Lepton-E in Italy and throughout Europe. The Lepton-E will be sold and distributed in the USA via ZAPWORLD.COM (Nasdaq: ZAPP). The remainder of the order, 2650 (Scooter Equivalent Battery Sets) is scheduled for delivery throughout the remainder of the year. Additional volume has been forecast, but is not included in the order at this time.
The Lepton-E has a single charge range average of 50 kilometers and a regulated top speed of 50 kph. It comes with a total range warranty that is nominally the same as the expected life of a gas scooter. A fast charging system is available as an option, but the on-board charger will recharge it with normal house current in less than 6 hours. The first production of the Lepton-E is currently expected in the second quarter of 2001.
"Our partnership with Oxygen is an important part of our strategy to introduce high-performance and cost-competitive electric scooters to 'early-adopter' markets in Europe and in Asia," said Robert L. Kanode, president and CEO of Evercel. "It's a nice bonus that we will now have access to these scooters here in the U.S. via ZAPWORLD.COM."

Products and services offered by the Company include: i) Light electric vehicle products that are primarily powered by Evercel's nickel-zinc battery technology, ii) an extensive network of battery charging stations and service/replacement centers.
