DETROIT, Jan 2 (Reuters) - The outlook for the automotive industry is decidedly poor as Detroit, birthplace of the modern assembly line, prepares to host its international auto show beginning on Sunday.

It's the industry's biggest yearly event and a celebration of all things automotive in the Motor City.

Executives representing 45 automakers from around the globe will unveil production and concept cars to great fanfare on the more than 1 million square feet of exhibit space in Detroit's Cobo Hall convention center.
